July 2 – 7, 2017 … my first time at Week of Rivers near Bryson City, North Carolina. This annual event is hosted by the Carolina Canoe Club. I’ve heard stories from my Wisconsin paddling friends about this event, so this year I decided to give it a try. It was a great time at Smokey Mountain Meadows campground with hundreds of other like-minded whitewater kayakers, attending the daily morning meeting in the big tent, meeting new paddling friends, and kayaking challenging rivers in North Carolina and Tennessee. The rivers I paddled were the Pigeon (twice), Nantahala and the Ocoee. I’m happy to report I had no swims the entire week, although I did have a few unplanned rolls.

Here’s a good description of what takes places at Week of Rivers each year.

Here’s my video from the week.

And here are a few photos…

One of the daily morning meetings in the big tent where kayakers would volunteer to lead trips on various rivers.

It rained every day. It was also sunny every day.

Not our rig but it was parked nearby. I have no idea how they man aged to navigate the narrow, winding road up to the campground.
