    1. Exactly, Phyllis. There are just too many things that can go wrong when paddling whitewater alone. I’ve done a lot of solo sea kayaking but for that I always have safety gear (and I practice using it) for emergencies. In general, sea kayaking emergencies develop more slowly, giving you time to assess the situation and determine a solution. Whitewater comes at you fast.

  1. More so than how many people are around you, regardless of your surroundings, is making sure there’s more safety than hazard. Weather, access, your own skill (paddling and self-rescue/rolling), your gear, types of hazards, time of day or year, water level, …., and so much more factor into paddling safely.
