It was a long time coming. While yesterday meant Black Friday shopping to many, I had something much more fun in mind. With winds out of the east and air temperatures reaching a mild 44F, it was the first decent kayak surf day on Lake Michigan that I could get out and enjoy. Surf boarders were out in full force at Sheboygan but I was the only kayaker in sight. Here are a few video clips from yesterday’s session. #optoutside
Hi Ken,
Thanks for posting. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Could you please tell me what boat you were surfing in and its length. Thank you,
Bradley Swartz
Hi, Bradley. For Great Lakes surfing I’ve had the best rides with a 10-ft-long Liquid Logic Remix XP
10. I’ve tried other people’s 13-ft boats (Hammer, Stinger for example) and found they tend to broach in steep waves like we get on Lake Michigan. And any whitewater boats shorter than 9 or 10 feet tend to spin, which I suppose is fine if you want to spin when you’re on the front side of a wave. I added float bags and static deck lines to my XP10 for safety.
