My first paddle day in the Midwest this season after kayaking in the Southeast US earlier this year. Apparently I’m still shaking off some winter rust. And yes that should be “CFS” for Cubic Feet per Second, not “CFI”. I shot the drone footage right before we launched our kayaks.

Kayak Videos: Music or “Au Naturel”?
I regularly post kayaking videos on YouTube and occasionally on Vimeo, but in case you missed any or all, here are my 2021 videos to date. I’m also sharing videos created by Angela (AKA “ang gru” on YouTube), who recently joined our gang of enthusiastic Wisconsin whitewater kayakers. By the […]
Brace Yourself
The Red River near Gresham, WI was running at a hefty 430 CFS Tuesday evening. In this video, kayakers in order of appearance, first at Monastery Falls: me (orange helmet and orange kayak), Matt, Justin, Mike, Cliff. And later at Zeimers: me, Justin. There was a glitch with the video […]
Foggy River Breakdown
A few photos from Tuesday evening “golf league” on the Red River. The air temperature was nearly 80⁰F and the water was 63⁰F, which produced dramatic scenes as the evening sun shone through the fog during quieter moments on the river. Boaters: Mike, Matt, Cliff and me. A blue heron […]
First-time paddlers try whitewater
Northeast Wisconsin Paddlers’ (NEWP) annual student whitewater outing on the Red River took place this past Saturday. Each year this event gives students from NEWP-led kayaking classes in Appleton, Green Bay and Fond Du Lac the opportunity to practice skills they learned during indoor pool classes. For some it was […]
Great Day for a great Dane
Sabastian, our Rotary club’s 16-year-old exchange student from Denmark, was introduced to whitewater kayaking on the Red River, which was running at a low, beginner-friendly level on June 12. He did great! A natural on the water. No capsizes other than premeditated ones for safety training purposes at the beginning […]
Kayakers Take Their First Plunge Into Whitewater
Northeast Wisconsin Paddlers (NEWP) annual whitewater student outing was held this past Saturday on the Red River. For most of the students it was their first experience kayaking on a whitewater river. It was great to see them challenge themselves by practicing what they learned in the classroom and pool […]
Rescuing a Dude
Last night reminded me that common sense is not all that common. I was with six other kayakers on one of our regular Tuesday evening whitewater runs on the Red River near Gresham, Wisconsin. It was around 7 p.m. We had just finished running the most technical feature, Monastery Falls […]
A Sticky Situation at the Monastery
Monastery Falls (also known as Novitiate) on Wisconsin’s Red River cascades ten feet in elevation over a distance of 200 feet. The second drop can sometimes be sticky. Some say sucky. Before launching last evening with the Tuesday evening regulars from NEWP, I handed my video camera to Angela to […]
White water on the Red River
For more years than anyone can remember there’s been an organized Tuesday evening paddle on the Red River near Gresham, Wis., from early spring deep into autumn. I’ve seen anywhere from four to 17 paddlers of all ability levels join in. The great thing about the Red, compared to many […]
